Ever watched a candle "tunnel" down the middle, leaving a wall of solid wax untouched on the edges? That's tunnelling: the number one reason a candle burns out twice as fast as the label promises.
The good news: it's fixable with three simple habits, starting from the very first burn. Here's the full method, tested in our workshop in Drôme Provençale on our own sunflower wax candles.
Why does a candle burn faster than expected?
A candle rated for 70 hours that only lasts 35 is almost never a manufacturing flaw. Three causes come up again and again:
- Tunnelling: the first burn was cut short, so the wax never "learned" to melt to the edges.
- A wick that's too long: it produces a bigger flame, more soot, and burns through wax faster than a steady flame.
- Poorly timed sessions: too short (tunnelling gets worse), or too long (the wick mushrooms and overheats the wax).
How do you avoid tunnelling from the first burn?
This is the single most important habit, and the most commonly skipped: on the very first burn, let the candle burn until the melted wax reaches the edges of the container, across its full width, not just the centre.

Once this "melt pool diameter" is set during the first burn, it stays fixed for the candle's entire life. That's why a single, too-short first burn can doom the whole candle to tunnelling.

How long should you burn a candle each time?
Between 2 and 4 hours per session, no less, no more.
Under 2 hours, the wax doesn't have time to re-melt all the way to the edges each time: tunnelling sets in gradually, session after session. Past 4 hours, the wick tends to "mushroom" (carbon builds up in a ball at the tip), the flame becomes unstable, and the wax overheats, which speeds up consumption.
For a 270g candle rated at 70 hours, that works out to roughly 20 to 25 sessions of 2 to 3 hours: plenty to see you through several weeks of evenings.

At equal weight, a plant-based wax like sunflower generally melts more slowly and evenly than raw paraffin, which translates into a longer burn and steadier fragrance diffusion, on top of burning with less soot.
