Natural soap for sensitive skin and babies: what to check
Sensitive Skin & Ingredients

Natural soap for sensitive skin and babies: what you really need to check

Clair de Lune soap by Sternartica, fragrance-free and allergen-free, for sensitive skin
✦ The essentials in 40 seconds

"Natural" doesn't mean "allergen-free". For babies, reactive skin, pregnancy or anyone on medical treatment, the right soap is above all one without fragrance, without essential oils and without contact allergens, even naturally derived ones. The INCI label lets you check that in seconds. Sternartica's Clair de Lune soap meets all three criteria.

For sensitive skin, babies, pregnancy or anyone on medical treatment, the right soap is above all one without fragrance, without essential oils and without contact allergens. These ingredients, even when naturally derived, are the leading causes of skin reactions on sensitive skin.

TheINCI label lets you check that in seconds.

"Natural" doesn't automatically mean "gentle on every skin". A 100% natural soap can contain very irritating essential oils, allergenic fragrances or plant extracts that reactive skin doesn't tolerate.

Why does sensitive skin react differently?

The skin barrier is the skin's first line of defence. In a baby it is immature for the first few years of life: the stratum corneum is thinner, the hydrolipidic film less developed, and the skin absorbs more of what is applied to it.

In someone whose skin is weakened by eczema, an allergic reaction, illness or medical treatment, that barrier is altered in the same way: more permeable, more reactive, less able to defend itself against irritants.

The result : ingredients perfectly tolerated by healthy skin can cause redness, itching or reactions on sensitive skin.

Which ingredients to avoid for sensitive skin or a baby

Fragrance and essential oils

Fragrance (listed as "PARFUM" or "FRAGRANCE" on the INCI) is the leading cause of contact allergy to cosmetics. It can cover dozens of different molecules, many of them recognised allergens that European regulation requires to be declared separately above a certain concentration.

Essential oils, natural as they are, contain the same allergenic molecules: LINALOOL, LIMONENE, GERANIOL, CITRAL, EUGENOL... all potentially irritating on fragile skin.

On a baby, essential oils are contraindicated up to age 3, and some up to age 6.

Colourants

Functionally pointless, added colourants can cause reactions on reactive skin. A soap without artificial colourant carries a lower risk.

Synthetic preservatives

Parabens, MIT (methylisothiazolinone) and other synthetic preservatives can trigger contact reactions on sensitive skin. Best avoided in formulas meant for fragile skin.

The actives that soothe reactive skin

Oat water (Avena Sativa Seed Water)

Oat is one of the best documented soothing actives in dermatology. Reynertson et al. (2015) showed that Avena sativa extracts improve skin barrier function and significantly reduce dryness, flaking and itch intensity.

Avenanthramides, the polyphenolic compounds found in oats, inhibit inflammatory processes at very low concentrations. The oat water we use shares those active properties: rich in beta-glucans and avenanthramides, it soothes reactive skin from the very first contact.

Shea butter (Butyrospermum Parkii Butter)

A recognised emollient and protector, shea butter forms a nourishing film on the skin that limits water loss and strengthens the skin barrier. Its richness in unsaturated fatty acids (oleic, linoleic) makes it an ally of dry, fragile skin.

Olive oil (Olea Europaea Fruit Oil)

Rich in squalene and polyphenols, olive oil nourishes deeply and protects skin from drying out. Used in cosmetics for millennia, its tolerance on sensitive skin is well established.

Sweet almond oil (Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil)

Emollient and light, sweet almond oil softens, moisturises and protects without being occlusive. It is traditionally used for newborn care and for atopic skin.

What makes a soap suitable for newborns

For newborns, the right soap meets three non-negotiable criteria:

  1. Zero essential oils , contraindicated in babies under 3
  2. Zero fragrance , the leading cause of contact allergy
  3. Zero declared allergens , no LINALOOL, LIMONENE, GERANIOL, CITRAL or other allergens listed by European regulation on the INCI

A cold process soap made with gentle vegetable oils (shea, olive, sweet almond) and oat water, with nothing added for scent, meets all three.

And during pregnancy, breastfeeding or medical treatment?

During pregnancy, many essential oils are contraindicated : some are emmenagogues, others cross the placental barrier. A soap without essential oils and without fragrance removes that risk at the source.

For anyone whose skin is weakened by medical treatment, whether chemotherapy, radiotherapy or a long dermatological course, care protocols generally recommend products without fragrance, without harsh preservatives and without colourants. A soap with gentle actives and a minimalist formula fits those recommendations.
